Cough in babies and infants

Cough in babies and infants

Even though parents feel especially for their little ones, colds and coughs are completely normal and usually harmless in infancy and childhood*. There's a simple reason for this: Babies' and children's immune systems still need to fully mature. In other words, it's only through exposure to germs and pathogens that the little one's defence mechanisms develop and gradually become complete. When a little one does catch a cold, coughing actually serves an important protective function for infants, babies, and children: It helps to clear the airways of mucus, dust, or other foreign particles.

Cough in babies and children: Home remedies and tips

Most respiratory illnesses are caused by viruses, which unfortunately cannot be directly treated. To help your little one feel better, in addition to herbal cough remedies from the pharmacy, there are also some simple home remedies and tips that can help relieve coughs and other symptoms. This will support your baby's or child's body in defending itself against these unwanted invaders.

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Drinking enough fluids is important because it not only thins the mucus in the nose and bronchi, but also moisturizes the mucous membranes. A double benefit!
  • As much fresh air as possible: If the baby is fever-free and the weather is not too unpleasant, it is advisable to wrap it up warmly and go outside regularly.
  • Good humidity: To prevent the mucous membranes from drying out, the room air should be sufficiently humid. Hanging damp towels near the crib can be enough – or placing a ceramic bowl of water on the radiator.
  • Removing mucus from the nose: The mucus can be carefully suctioned out with a small nasal aspirator.
  • Rest is essential: Fighting off an infection is a major strain on such a small body. Plenty of rest is therefore particularly important and aids recovery.
  • Giving love: The best medicine for every child is affection and love. During periods of illness, it is important to take extra time for the baby, to convey closeness, and to make them feel constantly cared for.

Cough in babies and children: When is a doctor's visit necessary?

Babies and infants, in particular, cannot yet properly communicate how they are feeling. Therefore, it is always necessary to consult a doctor for infants under one year old. Furthermore, a doctor's visit is always advisable if a child has a cough.

  • breathing difficulties occur,
  • The cough is accompanied by fever or a barking/whistling breathing sound,
  • the cough is painful and/or lasts for a particularly long time.

Generally speaking, parents are in the best position to assess their little one. However, if you're unsure, it's always better to err on the side of caution and consult a doctor to determine the cause of the cough.
